Learning Korean Trough K-Pops: Ojakgyo Family/ Ojakgyo Brothers (By: Popo)

Today we will leave the busy city to talk about the country life in Korea. Let’ meet drama which takes place in a duck farm near Seoul. It’s “Ojakgyo Family”. 

“Ojakgyo Family” is about four brothers who have different personalities. 

The drama focuses on their love interest and marriage. In the farm in a suburban Seoul district, a hardworking mother and goofy father live together as well as with their four sons. One day, a woman named Baek Jaeun appears in front of them and then occurs a big fight over control of the Ojakgyo Farm. Four women marry into the family of brothers to create an extended family. The drama was loved by viewers for its illustration of love and marriage.

“Ojakgyo Family” is based on a farm named “Ojakgyo (오작교)”. It is the name of a bridge from a Korean legend. In order to help two lovers meet, the bridge was created by magpies and crows once a year. So in Korea, “Ojakgyo” is known as the bridge that connects lovers together. Through this drama about four brothers who dream of love and marriage, let’s find out how they express their hopes.

When Taehui professes his love, he expects an answer from Jaeun.

First, Jaeun tells Taehui like this:

Doraogo sipeotta (놀아오고싶었다)

Jaeun had been away from the farm, but she had always wanted to return. The reason was that she missed his face (Bogo sipkko (보고싶고)), his voice (mokssoriseul deutkkosipkko (목소리를듣고싶고)), and wanted to run to him (dallyeogagosipeotkki (달려가고싶었기)).

Doraogo sippta. 놀아오고싶다

Bogo siptta. 보고싶다

Deotkko siptta. 듣고싶다

Dallyeogago siptta. 달려가고싶다

The most important part is “Mueoseul hago siptta (모엇을하고싶다)”.

By stating a certain action before the phrase, “Hago siptta (하고싶다)”, it expresses one’s desires to carry out that action. You can state the action you’d like before the phrase, “Hago siptta (하고싶다)”. 

For example:

If you want to say you want to eat something you can put “meokda” before “Hago siptta (하고싶다)” to create “Meokko siptta (먹고싶다)”.

If you want to sleep, say “Jago siptta (자고싶다)”.

If you want to go somewhere, say “Gago siptta (가고싶다)”.

There are other ways to express your desire other than “Hago siptta (하고싶다)”. Sentences end differently depending on other parties and situations, but the important word is “Barada (바라다)”. When you wish for something to become a certain way, you can say “Barada (바라다)”. When you place actions or things before “Barada (바라다)”, you usually say “–eul baranda (--을바란다)”. 

For example:

If you’d like to success, say “Seonggonghagireul baranda (성공하기를바란다)”.

If you’d like to be happy, say “Haengbokagireul baranda (항복하기를바란다)”.

If you want a certain action, you can add words before “Hago siptta (하고싶다)”.

Place the verbs meaning “to see”, “to hear”, “to go”, and “to eat” before the phrase to make

Bogo siptta. 보고싶다

Deotkko siptta. 듣고싶다

Gago siptta. 가고싶다

Meokko siptta. 먹고싶다

If you really want something to go your way, you can say “barada (바라다)”.

You can add word such as “success” or “happiness” to create

Seonggonghagireul baranda (성공하기를바란다) or

Haengbokagireul baranda (항복하기를바란다).

Sebuah Tulisan Memotivasi Diri Sendiri

Hari ini gue memutuska untuk terus menulis, apapun itu. Gue selalu berharap gue bisa jadi penulis yang hebat, yang bisa bikin buku, bikin novel, bikin LKS, bikin buku cetak buat ana SD, eh yang dua terkahir itu kalo udah kepepet aja deng, hehe. Gue pengen bisa kayak penulis-penulis hebat yang ada di luaran sana (termasuk luang angkasa juga, ya kalo ada penulis dari luar angkasa sih...). Agatha Christie, J.R.L. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Roald Dahl, C. S. Lewis, walah masih buanyak lagi penulis-penulis hebat yang bener-bener tulisannya layak buat diapresiasi. Belum lagi yang dari negeri sendiri, salah satung Dee, tulisan dia itu unik banget. 

Nah, gue pengen kayak mereka itu. Tapi selama ini gue cuma ngalamun, ngayal, apa lagi, mimpi, kalo gue pengen jadi penulis, tapi gue sama sekali nggak pernah mau mengawali niat buat nulis. Sebenernya banyak yang udah gue tulis, status, tweet, status, tweet, 15 status perhari, 30 tweet per hari, banyak kan? Lho, itu termasuk menuils lho ya, nulis up date an.. Haha.. 

Ini sebenernya mau unulis apaan sih gue? Jadi bingung sendiri.. 

Gue sebenernya suka nulis, tapi nggak tahu ya yang namanya ide itu suka seenaknya sendiri. Jadi ni ya kalo gue udah duduk manis di depan laptop dengan segala keinginan gue buat nulis, ide tuh nggak pernah mau yang namanya dateng ke otak gue. Numpang lewat aja kagak mau dia. Udah sampe merem melek nyari ide, segala posisi nulis udah gue coba, sampe ketik REG spasi IDE juga udah, tapi tetep aja tuh ide kagak nongol-nongol. Giliran gue lagi ngapain gitu, eh si ide asal nylonong aja gitu masuk ke otak gue. Iya kalo pas gue kebetulan deket sama sepasukan alat tulis menulis, lha kalo gue pas suatu saat deketnya sama sepasukan  mahasiswa mau demo, apa iya gue tiba-tiba nepuk pundak salah satu mahasiswa itu sambil ngomon, "Mas, boleh pinjem bolpen sama kertasnya? Tiba-tiba saya dapet ide buat tulsan saya nih mas," Iya kalo masnya itu kebetulan bawa, lha kalo yang ada masnya tiba-tiba brubah jadi Godzilla trus gue yang di demo gimana? Gue juga kan yang susah. Tapi emang gimana ya rasanya di demo? Itu brati kan kayak kita di labrak sama orang yang nggak setuju sama kita kan? Kenapa jadi mikir itu?? 

Ah, gue emang kebanyakan basa-basi nih, gue tah banget gimana kalo gue udah bertele-tele, kebanyakan selingan, malah jadi nggak fokus. Ini kenapa jadi bahas aib gue? Ah, gue emang comel banget... Sampe mana tadi?? Tuh kaan ilang lagi ide gue buat nulis, salah siapa coba kalo udah gini? Siapa yang mau tanggung jawab kalo gue udah kehilangan ide kayak gini? Nggak ada kan? Emang yang namanya ide itu misteri dunia akhirat segala abad sepanjang tata surya (kayak pernah denger nih..), susah buat diukurnya. Gue kalo udah keabisan ide pasti cuma bisa, close Ms Word, Start, Shut Down.. 3 minggu kemudian baru keinget pas buka Ms Word lagi kalo lagi nulis... Jiah, kalo gini mah kapan tulisan-tulisan gue kelar? Sampe Indonesia bisa masuk World Cup juga kagak pernah selesai tulisan-tulisan gue. Nasib.. Nasib.. Semua ini emang gara-gara si ide itu, udah sering gue di PHP sama dia, tapi nggak tahu kenapa masih aja gue berharap sama dia, cinta gue ke dia emang nggak akan pernah padam.. *jadi Sandy Sandoro*

Tapi.. Kenapa gue jadi nyalahin ide ya? Sebenernya si ide itu nggak salah-salah amat sih, dia kan masih dalam masa pertumbuhan, masih labil, jadi suka galau, suka pergi ddateng nggak jelas, trus semua ini gara-gara apa dong? Kalo gue urut-urut ini, usut punya usut, semua ini emang berawal dari diri gue sendiri.. Gue aja kaget kok bisa semua ini berasal dari diri gue sendiri, kenapa? Kenapa? Kenapa gue yang disalahin? Apa salah gue? Apa? Gue kan masih SMP... Apa yang bisa dilakuin anak SMP kayak gue? Gue nggak bisa apa-apa, gue nggak berdaya.... (Ini menjadi bukti kalo gue kebanyakan nonton sinetron yang banyak adegan penganiayaannya, biasanya sinetronnya diawali dengan seorang anak yang dipungut, 78 episode kemudian dia menerima warisan dari ayah angkatnya yang disertai teriakan dari ibu angkat yang nggak terima.. Hiks.. Tragis...) Itulah kenapa gue ngak pernah bisa kreatif, nontonnya sinetron bawang bombay mulu sih... 

Tuh kan, ngarang lagi.. Sampe mana coba tadi gue nulisnya... inget-inget dulu ya...

8 jam kemudian...

Masih belum inget...

3 hari kemudian...

Belum juga inget..

Lempar bakiak!!!

Oke gue inget (nulis dengan muka ada bekas bakiak), jadi ini bukan karena ide, ini karena gue, gue yang memulai semua ini, gue,... Sekali lagi, GUE! Gue nggak pernah mau memotivasi diri gue buat nulis, gue nggak pernah meluruska niat (karena emang belum ada yang nyediain jasa rebonding niat) jadi ya gini ini, niat gue masih curly dan sedikit bergelombang. Di jaman sekarang ini mau nulis itu jadi hal yang gampang banget. Komputer, laptop, netbook, semua serba canggih. Mau nulis di mana aja, share ke mana aja, semua udah tinggal klik klik dan beres. Nggak kayak dulu yang musti capeknya berkali-kali, capek beli bolpen, beli kertas, masih capek nulis berlembar-lembar, belum kalo salah mesti ngulang. Lha sekaranng kurang apa coba? Nulis tinggal negtik, share tinggal cari web yang pas, gampil gampil gampil gampil!! Tapi gue, sampe sekarang masih belum bisa menghasilkan apa-apa. Tulisan (yang masih belum kelar) gue masih tersimpan (kurang) rapi di folder-folder yang ada di netbook gue yang setia, belum kepikiran mau dibawa kemana.. 

Jadi mulai sekarang gue berusaha untuk bisa menjadikan diri gue alat tulis yang bisa menghasilkan tulisan-tulisan, walalu mungkin kurang berkualitas, tapi seenggak-enggaknya bermakna buat diri gue sendiri (dan semoga juga buat orang lain..). Gue akan terus menulis, apapun itu, bahkan menulis resep pun mungkin kelak akan gue lakuin, karena gue suka, gue suka nulis, dan gue suka itu. Mungkin nggak ada orang yang mau baca tulisan gue, terbukti dari banyak tulisan gue yang gue share, cuma satu dua yang baca, itupun dengan ancaman dan paksaan, tapi nggak papa, gue akan menjadi pembaca setia tulisan gue, dan semoga akan ada pengikut-pengikutnya keak entah brapa ribu tahu cahaya lagi... 

Gue akan terus menulis.. Terutama menulis pengeluaran gue per bulan, dan juga menuliskan mimpi-mimpi gue di tembok kamar gue, biar kalo gue bangun, gue nggak bakalan lupa apa impian gue, dan mungkin aja gue bakalan bisa mewujudkan semua impian gue itu..

Today, I’ve prepared songs of an idol band that all the readers like. Are you curious? They’re amazing young men. You can look forward them singing a song related to an apron. Of the many K-Pop groups, you can’t leave out “Super Junior”, the most popular group of them all. “Super Junior” is talented I both singing and dancing. It’s an awesome boy band that debuted in 2005. There are many members in the group, and they are loved by many fans.

The song that I’ll introduce today is a song of a sub-unit group of “Super Junior” that sings mostly cheerful songs. “Cooking? Cooking!” by “Super Junior Happy”. Today’s focus is on “Super Junior”! do all of you love them? All of the members are handsome and are great at singing. We’ll look at “Cooking? Cooking!” lyrics, a very exciting song by “Super Junior”. “Wang” is a word that expresses someone that is best at something. Do you remember? So the song is about someone who cooks the best.

The song is about girlfriend who can’t cook but learns how to cook to make the best dish for her boyfriend. Let’s learn expression related to food and its taste. The most important thing about food is its taste. “Mat (맛)” is what you feel with your tongue when you eat.

When something tastes very good, you can say “Masitta (맛있다)”.

Babi masitta. (밥이맛있다) = This delicious rice.

Ppangi masitta. (빵이맛있다) = Delicious bread.

Pizza-ga masitta. (피자가맛있다) = Pizza is delicious.

You can complete the sentence by adding the name of a certain food.

But if the food tastes bad, you can say “Madeoptta (맛없다)”. The opposite of “Masitta (맛있다)” is “Madeoptta (맛없다)”.

Babi madeoptta. (밥이맛없다) = The rice is not good.

Ppangi madeoptta. (빵이맛없다) = The bread is not good.

Pizza-ga madeoptta. (피자가맛없다) = Pizza is not good.

It’s easy, isn’t it?

When you want someone who taste you food to say “Masitta (맛있다)” or “Madeoptta (맛없다)”, you must ask the person how the food taste first.

You can ask like this “Masi eottae? (맛이어때?)”.

There are more formal ways to ask the question.

“Masi eottaeyo? (맛이어때요?)”.

For the response you can say

“Masisseoyo (맛있어요)”.

“Madeopsseoyo (맛없어요)”.

Or

“Masi eotteosseunikka? (맛이어떻슴니까?)” .

You can answer

“Masisseumnida (맛있슴니다)”.

“Madeopsseumnida (맛없슴니다)”.

There are many types of taste. Shall we learn about this? Let’s take a look to another song by “Super Junior”.

It’s the song called “Bittersweet” by “Super Junior”. It’s a difficult expression. But the lyrics include words such a “Dalkom (달콤)” and “Sseudisseun (쓰디쓴)”.

“Dalkom (달콤)” comes from “Dalda (달다)” which means sweet.

Do you like to eat candy or chocolate? I like chocolate very much.

“Dalda (달다)” expresses a sweet taste like candy and chocolate.

Satangi dalda. (사탕이달다) = This candy is sweet.

Chocolate-i dalda. (초콜릿이달다) = Chocolate is sweet.

Seoltangi dalda. (설탕달다) = Sugar is sweet.

Kkuri dalda. (꿀이달다) = Honey is sweet.

Thos are some good examples.

The next expression is “Sseudisseun (쓰디쓴)”.

It comes from “Sseuda (쓰다)” which means a bitter taste.

The opposite of “Dalda (달다)”, “Sseuda (쓰다)” is a taste that is very bad.

Yogi sseuda. (양이쓰다) = The medicine is bitter.

Coffe-ga sseuda. (커피가쓰다) = The coffee is bitter.

Those are some examples.

In the song “Bittersweet”, it depicts the words between lovers sound as sweet as candy, but the meaning of the words are also as bitter as medicine.

Other expressions of taste that appear in the Korean language include a taste that stingy when you eat chili pepper and mustard. It’s “Maeptta (맵다)”.

Do you gimchi, Korea’s most famous food? When your mouth stings after eating gimchi, you can say:

Gimchiga maeptta. (김치가맵다) = Spicy gimchi.

Gimchijjigaega meptta. (김치찌개가맵다) = Spicy gimchi stew.

Gochuga maeptta. (고추가맵다) = Spicy pepper.

Those are some examples.

Which expression would you like to illustrate the taste of salt?

It’s “Jjada (짜다)”

Sogeumi jjada. (소금이짜다) = The salt is salty.

Jeotkkari jjada (젓갈이짜다) = Salted fish is salty.

Those are two examples.

Satangi dalda. (사탕이달다) = The candy is sweet.

Yogi sseuda. (양이쓰다) = The medicine is bitter.

Gimchiga maeptta. (김치가맵다) = Spicy gimchi.

Sogeumi jjada. (소금이짜다) = The salt is salty.

On November 6, 2005, “Super Junior” debuted with their first song, “Twins”.

 In fall 2012, they celebrated 7 years of their debuted. Over the last 7 years, they toured Japan, China, Southeast Asia, the States, and Europe. 

They become the best loved K-Pop group in the world. Despite their busy overseas schedule and sub-unit activities, the group is famous for the love of their fans and their friendship. They will publish a photo album in Asia to celebrate 7 years. Let’s look forward to what they will present next in the future.

Learning Korean Trough K-Pops: Famous Princesses (By:Popo)

Long time no see, it's been a while since the last time I wrote about learning Korean, and now let's start again.....

I’ve prepared a drama that features female member of the Korean army. 

“Famous Princesses” is a family drama about a household with many daughters. The four daughters of a former army officer appear, and their names are Deokchil, Seolchil, michil, and Jongchil. 

They lead very different lives a their different characters. The four daughters and the people that surround them reflected te lives of contemporary women of Korean society very well. This is a fun and touching story full of laughter and tears. It was very popular because the acting was very realistic.

Shall we first learn about the title, “Famous Princesses”? “Gongju (공주)” is a term used for princesses, which means the daughter of the king. But there aren’t any princesses in Korea today. So if you’re talking about “Gongju (공주)” these days, it’s to depict a very precious daughter of one’s family.

Shall we find out how to express ourselves when we’re sick? When you are feeling bad because you are hurt or due to bad illness, you can say “Apeuda (아프다)” in Korean.

You can either say “Apeuda (아프다)” or “Apayo (아파요)”.

I hurt my finger earlier. In this case, I can say Sonkkaragi apeuda (손가락이 아프다).

“Apeuda (아프다)” is a word you can use when you are sick or in an accident. You can use the word with all parts of your bodies. Is any part of your body hurting right now? Why don’t you use “Apeuda (아프다)” behind the part that hurts?

Baega apeuda. (배가 아프다)

Mogi apeuda. (목이 아프다)

Meoriga apeuda. (머리가 아프다)

These are some examples.

“Apeuda (아프다)” can be used to mean that your hurt is hurting, too. When you’ve broken up with someone you love, you can say Maeumi apeuda (마음이 아프다) or Gaseumi apeuda (이슴이 아프다). Please remember that “Apeuda (아프다)” can be used for both body and heart.

Michil’s boyfriend, Ilhan, is worried about Michil, asks a question “Apeuni? (아프니?)”

At first, Michil answers like this, ”Eung, apa (응, 아파)”. But she changes her mind to say, “Ani, an apa” (아니, 안아파).

She is feeling sick, but she just wants to see Ilhan.

If you want to ask a friend if she is sick or not, you can ask by saying “Apeuni? (아프니?)”.

The answer can be either

“Eung, apa (응, 아파)”, or

“Ani, an apa (아니, 안아파)”.

If you want to be more formal, you can ask like this:

“Apayo? (아파요?)”

The answer can be either

“Apayo (아파요)”, or

“An apayo (안 아파요)”.

Our bodies can be hurt anywhere. And there are so many illnesses in this world. That’s way there are many ways t express how you are sick. 

The characters in the drama are talking about “Gamgi (감기)” which is cold. The correct expression is “Gamgie geollida (감기에 걸리다)”. The verb to use in getting sick is “Geollida (걸리다)”.

Gamgie Geollida. 감기에 걸리다

Byeonge geollida.  병에걸리다

Ame geollida. 암에걸리다

Those are such examples.

But what happen to the body when you catch a cold? When your body temperature rises due to catching a cold, you can say “Yeolnada (열나다)”. When you have a cough due to a cold, “Gichim nada (기침이나다)”.

“Famous Princesses” featured many actors and actresses. But Lee Taeran and Choi Jungwon were most popular.

Lee Taeran was a good will ambassador for the army. She also gained popularity in China and filmed many dramas and commercials there. She is currently focused on doing volunteer work.

Choi Jungwong played Michil on the show. She continued to act in many dramas and films. She is currently boasting her great skin and taking fashion editorials as well as hosting a show on beauty.

Lee Seung Gi attracted the most attention as the male actor. He was more famous as a singer until he succeeded in acting for the first time on “Famous Princesses”. He was recognized for his acting and continues on to other dramas.

We’ve learned about expression of feeling sick trough a drama. Shall we review the expression we have learned today?

If you are sick because you are hurt or because of an illness, say “Apeuda (아프다)” or “Apayo (아파요)”.

If you want to ask someone is sick, “Apeuni? (아프니?)”.

You can answer by saying, “Eung, apa (응, 아파)” Or “Ani, an apa (아니, 안아파).”.

When your body temperature has risen, say “Yeolnada (열나다)”.

When you have a cough, say “Gimchi nada (기침이나다)”.

When you’re having a fever and a cough, say “Gamgie geollida (감기에 걸리다)”.
